Polonnaruwa · North Central Province
Polonnaruwa
A medieval royal city best explored by bicycle.
When Anuradhapura fell, the kings moved here, and in the 11th and 12th centuries Polonnaruwa flourished. Its ruins are compact and well preserved — perfect to explore by bicycle along shady paths.
The highlight is Gal Vihara, where four Buddha figures were carved from a single granite face, their expressions calm and lifelike. Nearby, the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir still waters the fields.
