Sigiriya
A 5th-century rock fortress rising from the plains.
In the 5th century, King Kashyapa built his palace on top of a sheer 200-metre rock rising out of the jungle. Today you climb the same path he did — past water gardens, painted maidens on the cliff face and a pair of giant stone lion paws guarding the final stairway.
At the summit, the palace foundations look out over forest and reservoirs in every direction. Arrive early, while the air is cool and the light is soft.
